Known
for her bold and personal interpretations as well as her commitment to
the promotion and pedagogy of the harp, Ann Yeung has
established herself as one of the foremost harpists of her
generation. Active as a performer, teacher, and author, she is Editor
of the World Harp Congress Review, the official publication of
the World Harp Congress. Winner of numerous international and national
competitions including top prizes in the Lily Laskine International
Harp Competition (France) and the Nippon Harp Competition (Japan), her
musical career was launched when she became the only person to win
First Prize in the two highest divisions of the American Harp
Society’s national competition at the age of seventeen (USA).
Dedicated to the expansion of the harp’s repertoire, she premiered her
transcription of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations at Carnegie
Hall as a winner of Artists International and has given numerous world
premiere performances, most recently of interactive multi-media works
for harp. Her students include national First Prize winners and the
innovative ensemble, The HarpCore Four. She also has served as Second
Vice-President of the American Harp Society (AHS) and Chair of the AHS
Harp Literature Committee. She received her Doctor of Music and
Artist Diploma from Indiana University where she studied with Susann
McDonald. Currently, she is Associate Professor of Harp and Chair of
the String Division at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
where she heads the harp program, is Principal Harp of the Sinfonia da
Camera, and conducts an annual Summer Harp Class at UIUC (June
7-9, 2007).

Feb 2007 - Meet Dan Yu at the Chamber

In July 2001, Dan
Yu won First Prize in the 5th USA International Harp Competition-the
first harpist from China ever to win this prestigious competition. The
USA International Harp Competition, which is held every three years in
Bloomington, IN, has launched the careers of some of the top harpists
in the world. Competing against 36 competitors from 14 countries, Ms.
Yu was unanimously awarded the Gold Medal, and also captured two
additional prizes for her interpretation of the Concerto No. 1 by
Ginastera, and for the solo work Maqamat by the contemporary Israeli
composer, Ami Ma'ayani. As part of the First Prize, Dan Yu won a
unique Commemorative Gold Harp made specially for the Competition by
Lyon & Healy Harps, and donated by the Victor Salvi Foundation, as
well as a recording contract, and recitals in London, New York, France
and Japan.
Dan Yu's lyrical
interpretations, profound musicality, and technical mastery have
captivated and dazzled audiences across three continents. She has
performed solo recitals and chamber music concerts throughout the
United States, Europe and Asia, and this season will be presented in
two debut recitals in Alice Tully Hall, New York, and Wigmore Hall,
London. Other performances this year include solo recitals at the
World Harp Congress in Geneva, and in San Francisco, Salt Lake City,
Las Vegas, Denver and Atlanta. Her debut CD on the Egan Records label
was released this spring.
A frequent
competition winner, Ms. Yu was also a winner of the Anne Adams
Competition of the American Harp Society for two consecutive years
(1995 and 1996). An experienced teacher as well as performer, she was
Director of the nationally acclaimed Roanoke County Schools Harp
Ensemble from 1999 to 2000.
Ms. Yu was born in
Shenyang, in the province of Liaoning, in China in 1974. She began
studying piano at the age of 6 and harp at 10 with Prof. Ping-Qiu Yue
at the Middle School of Shenyang Conservatory of Music, and came to
the United States in 1993 to continue her harp studies. She studied
with Dr. Ruth Inglefield at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore and is
currently studying with Susann McDonald at Indiana University.
